The Outpost (sometimes called the Compound) is a safe zone: auto-turrets kill anyone who pulls a weapon or commits a crime inside, so it is a guaranteed-safe place to trade and use crafting stations.
It hosts vending machines that sell useful items for scrap, a recycler, a research table, a repair bench, and the drone marketplace — where you can order items remotely and have a delivery drone bring them to you. It is the social and economic centre of most wipes: a place to convert scrap into gear, research blueprints and meet other players without risk.
Note that you cannot loot crates or fight here — the Outpost’s value is in services, not loot. Its safe-zone status also makes it a natural meeting point for trades arranged in chat, and a refuge if you are being chased.
